SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Good Things Utah) - Dr. Maria Borrero, an oncologist with Intermountain Health stopped by Good Things Utah to encourage increase breast cancer awareness - particularly among women of color.

Dr. Borrero, is an oncologist who is originally from Colombia and is passionate about cancer health disparities, survivorship and quality of life of all patients, particularly as it relates to the Hispanic community. Over the past decade, her research has centered on creating culturally tailored interventions to improve access to cancer screening and treatment for underserved populations.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women after skin cancer. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death in women, but the leading cause of cancer death among Black and Hispanic women. Latina women are less likely than White women to be up to date on breast cancer screening (which should take place annually after age 45) and some are less likely to have their cancer found at an earlier stage when it may be easier to treat.

In 2024, an estimated 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 56,500 cases of ductal carcinoma (breast cancer) in situ (where it first formed in the body) will be diagnosed among women in the U.S., as well as 2,790 cases of male invasive breast cancer.

The breast cancer death (mortality) rate has dropped by 44% since 1989 because of advances in treatment and earlier detection, averting approximately 517,900 breast cancer deaths. American Cancer Society breast cancer guidelines recommend women at average risk begin regular screening mammograms at age 45, and as early as age 40 if they choose to begin screening earlier. Talk to your healthcare provider about breast cancer screening. Factors such as family history, genetics and lifestyle choices can influence when screening should start and how often someone should get screened.
