UTAH COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - Intermountain Health has added services and new resources in Utah County so that residents diagnosed with cancer can receive comprehensive cancer close to home.

The Intermountain Cancer Center at Utah Valley Hospital is part of Intermountain Health’s nationally recognized comprehensive cancer treatment network, with locations throughout Utah and surrounding states. A major goal is to keep people closer to home when it comes to receiving their cancer care and treatment.

The Center has added a full-time dedicated medical oncologist, David Ririe, MD, who is able to treat patients close to home – allowing for shorter travel time, saving on gas, and receiving care in a familiar setting with caregivers they know.

“Our program is continuing to grow and expand,” said Brandon Barney, MD, a radiation oncologist at the Intermountain Cancer Center at Utah Valley Hospital. “We’re committed to resourcing cancer services to the communities of Utah County. We feel it our mission, an obligation and duty to care for our communities. As cancer care advances, so will Intermountain’s Cancer Program.”

Radiation oncologists, including Dr. Barney, are also part of the team and offer weekly cancer center appointments for patients.

In addition to medical oncology and radiation oncology, other services offered at the Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital Cancer Center include:

• Oncology infusion where they administer a wide array of cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, biotherapy, and immunotherapy.

• Supportive treatments include hydration, nausea medications, electrolytes, and antibiotics.

• Lab services for patients with central lines or patients receiving other treatments.

• Central line maintenance.

• Oncology Nurse Navigation.

• Financial Navigation.

• Oncology Clinical Social Worker services.

• Dietician consultations.

• Language Services.

In Utah County, Intermountain has long maintained a group of dedicated physicians and providers who have developed intricate proficiency in radiation oncology techniques and procedures.

“We now also have cancer experts capable of delivering the latest in systemic therapies like immunotherapies, targeted therapies, chemotherapies and hormonal therapies,” said Dr. Barney. “This expansion also comes with a group of reliable and dutiful professionals who help to navigate the complex cancer journey, including nurse navigators, financial navigators, social workers, nurses, and others.”

All Intermountain Cancer Center locations provide an integrated, personalized approach to cancer care close to home for patients, with clinics located throughout the Intermountain West, as well as tele-health services for patients.

“We know that while cancer care is becoming more sophisticated and specialized, we also know that our ability to deliver that care to someone close to home is a reality and should be expected,” said Dr. Ririe. “It’s essential to ensuring a better experience for patients and their caregivers. Expanding these services in Utah County means more convenience and efficiency without sacrificing on expertise and ability.”

Intermountain has developed 11 systemwide different disease-focused programs with large multi-disciplinary teams of physicians, nurses, therapists, genetic counselors, dieticians, and other expert staff who are all focused on each patients individualized treatment plan.

“It’s definitely a comprehensive and compassionate team approach focused on prevention, screening and convenient treatments,” said Dr. Ririe. “We want to ease the burdens of cancer for patients in Utah County and beyond.”
